After over 20 years of performing and entertaining as an amateur band, the Challenge Brass Band, like many organisations is finding it harder to continue to function. With increasing costs such as public liability insurance, recent facility hire by the local council for the use of the practice room and faced with the difficult task of replacing the recently retired bandmaster, Peter Tuck OAM and founding member, the Challenge Brass Band is looking for new forms of financial support to meet these increasing demands.
Who is the Challenge Brass Band?
The Challenge Brass Band was created in 1987 by Mr Peter Tuck OAM Cit WA and Ray Larner Originally the band was created for Non Able & Able Bodied musicians to be offered some thing challenging that they thought might not be possible. The name of the band was chosen by its founding members because it truly represents a Challenge to be able to play in a brass band.
Now over 20 years later, the band membership is still strong with current members ranging from 10 years to over 80 years old, with a mixture beginners and experienced players, some with handicaps. The band provides free loan on instruments and uniforms to players and if needed, music lessons!
A very much community orientated band, the Challenge Brass Band members play for fun and enjoyment as well as for the love of music. As the saying goes “If you carry it, you may as well blow it!”
The Band regular provides free engagements such as Anzac Day Services of Wanneroo, Joondalup, Yanchep and Scarborough as well as Bruce Rock Back to the Bush Veterans Reunion every November. Some of the regular band performances include playing at retirement villages, aged care facilities, Wanneroo Swap meets and the Communicare Turning on the Christmas lights, we play at Australia Day celebrations, Ethnic National Days and Christmas Carol Services. One of our recent highlights was the Toodyay Royal Flying Doctors Service fund raiser in which the band helped raise much needed funds for the RFDS, as well as providing music for the 41st Anniversary Service of the Battle of Coral (1968 Vietnam) in Kings Park.
So as well as providing a community organisation for those musically inclined or interested in playing, the band also serves the community through it’s performances.
